Instructor: Shaunia Grant ~

Shaunia is an artist and educator originally from New Mexico who received their MFA from the University of Georgia. They teach at UGA and can often be found creating new work in their own studio. Everyone at TREEHOUSE is a big Shaunia fan, and they absolutely love teaching kids!

Shaunia lives with their wife, Gab, and their cat, Clementine, and they are constantly blowing us away with their art and their activity in the art world. Shaunia is a wonderful inspiration to our students, giving them a firsthand look at what life as a working artist can look like. We’re so lucky to have them as part of the TREEHOUSE art community!

STUDIO SERIES: Step into the studio and make some art! Studio Series is a focused dive into the materials, techniques, tools, and practices that artists use to make art. Each session explores a different art-making discipline through hands-on projects, creative experimentation, and skill-building.
Students will work with artist grade art materials and real studio tools while learning techniques specific to each medium. Along the way, they’ll develop their own creative practices, learn how to use and care for materials, build confidence with new techniques, and discover how artists turn ideas into finished work. Each session is designed to be both educational and fun, with plenty of room for experimentation, creativity, and individual expression.
SESSION 1: DRAWING + PAINTING | We’ll start with the foundations of the art studio through a deep dive into drawing and painting. Students will explore a variety of materials and techniques while learning about mark-making, composition, color mixing, shading, layering, and more. Through a variety of projects and creative exercises, students will experiment with how different materials and techniques can be used to create artwork while developing their own approach to drawing and painting.
SESSION II: METALSMITHING + JEWELRY MAKING | Get ready to work with real metal and real metalsmithing tools! Students will learn the foundations of jewelry making and safely explore techniques used by professional metalsmiths. They’ll learn how to manipulate, shape, texture, and transform metal while creating their own unique jewelry and other small metal pieces.
This session is taught by an instructor with an MFA in Metalsmithing who teaches in the Metalsmithing Department at the University of Georgia, giving students the opportunity to learn real studio techniques from a professional metalsmith.
SESSION III: CERAMICS | Get your hands in the clay! Students will explore the wonderful world of ceramics while learning techniques for creating both functional and non-functional forms. We’ll experiment with different ways to build and shape clay, create interesting textures and surfaces, and explore a variety of glazing techniques.
Students will take their pieces from raw clay through the creative process of finishing and glazing, learning how artists use both form and surface to create unique ceramic artwork.
SESSION IV: BOOK ARTS + PRINTMAKING | Explore the many ways artists can create with paper, ink, and print! Students will experiment with a variety of printmaking methods while learning how artists create multiples, patterns, textures, and images through the printing process.
We’ll also explore book arts, bookmaking, papermaking, and more, combining traditional techniques with creative experimentation. Students will learn how individual materials and processes can be combined to create unique books, prints, and paper-based artwork.
